8 weeks before your move date. This gives time to declutter, get quotes, change your address, and pack without stress.
Create a moving binder with your date, address, and budget. Then declutter — a smaller move is cheaper and faster.
Local: $1,400–$2,500. Cross-country: $4,000–$7,500. Depends on distance, weight, and DIY vs. full-service movers.
DIY saves money ($300–800 truck rental) but takes more effort. Hire movers for long-distance or heavy furniture. Get 3 quotes.
File with USPS online (5 minutes). Then update: license, voter registration, banks, insurance, subscriptions, employer.
Pack an "open first" box last: TP, paper towels, trash bags, charger, snacks, water, tools, sheets, towels. First off the truck.
Room by room. Label every box with contents AND room. Use towels as packing material. Start with rarely-used rooms 4+ weeks out.
2–3 weeks before moving day. Schedule disconnect + connect for the same day. Electric, gas, water, internet, trash.
Never pack hazardous materials, perishable food, important documents (carry these), jewelry, or irreplaceable photos.
Keep pets in a quiet room on moving day. Update microchip info. Carry vet records. Ask vet about anxiety meds for long moves.
